Walt Disney World Resort
18.8 miles to Orlando International Airport
Walt Disney World Resort consists of 27,258 acres, which house 27 themed resort hotels, 9 non–Disney hotels, 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, golf courses, one camping resort, and a number of entertainment venues.
But the main points of interest at Walt Disney World are its four theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, with it’s own one-of-a-kind attraction.
It spans 107 acres, and since 1971 it has offered guests the chance to explore six themed areas whose main focus is on the classic Disney experience:
Main Street, Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
Some of the more popular attractions at the park include It’s a Small World, Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Jungle Cruise.
Magic Kingdom was the first theme park to open in the complex and since 1971 it has changed tremendously, mostly due to new developments in technology. However, the basic concept of the theme park is hasn’t changed, and it is still represented by Cinderella Castle, inspired by the fairy tale castle seen in the 1950 film.
The next theme part to open was Epcot, in 1982. The sixth most popular theme park in the world is represented by a geodesic sphere, Spaceship Earth, which is an attraction itself.
Epcot is divided into two main themed areas: Future World and World Showcase.
Future World is made up of several buildings that explore advanced applications in technology and science, with each building offering individual attractions. Future World is also the park’s main entrance.
World Showcase is an area similar to a permanent world’s fair containing 11 buildings, with each building dedicated to representing a specific country.
3-Disney’s Hollywood Studios
This one came next, and it was designed to focus on the magical side of Hollywood. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is divided into six themed areas:
Hollywood Boulevard, inspired by the street in Los Angeles, is the park’s main entrance.
Echo Lake, inspired by the real location of a similar name, includes three major attractions based on characters and films created by George Lucas. Muppets Courtyard is themed to The Muppets franchise. Pixar Place is devoted to movies and characters that were created by Pixar Animation Studios. Animation Courtyard is next. This attraction is based on movies created by Disney Animation Studios. At the entrance, there is a square “studio arch.” Lastly, there is Sunset Boulevard, which is inspired by a real location. It opened in July 1994. The focal point of Sunset Boulevard is the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. This thrilling ride was named after Rod Serling’s epic CBS television series.
4-Disney’s Animal Kingdom
In 1998, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a zoological theme park, opened at the Walt Disney World Resort. It is divided into six themed areas. The main entrance to the park is The Oasis, with the principal paths leading further into the park, and to Discovery Island.
1-Discovery Island is in the center of the Discovery River waterway and in the middle of the park. It is the focal point which connects the other areas of the park.
2-Africa is set in a fictional African port village named Harambe. This is one of the original areas of the park where you will see animal exhibits. This village is the namesake of the Harambe Wildlife Preserve.
3-Rafiki’s Planet Watch, Guests take a train ride to see cotton-top tamarins and to learn how to protect this endangered species. You’ll get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes into Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s animal care facilities. There is a petting zoo outside with sheep, goats, and other domestic animals.
4-Asia opened in 1999 and it was the first expansion added to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It is set in a fictional kingdom named Anandapur. Expedition Everest is the center point of Asia. This is a roller coaster which goes through the Mountain of the Himalayas. Kali River Rapids is close by. It takes you along the Chakranadi River through a rainforest, past an unlicensed logging operation and down a waterfall.
5-DinoLand U.S.A. has a theme of dinosaurs and extinct prehistoric life. The area is made stronger by the Dino Institute, a phony palaeontological facility which is home to a somber thrill ride featuring a chilling journey through time to the Late Cretaceous Period.
6-Future is the collaboration between Disney and filmmaker James Cameron. On January 10, 2014, construction began, with the land scheduled to open in May 2017. Disney approved two attractions for the area at the 2015 D23 Expo: a flying augmented reality simulator attraction and a boat ride attraction.
